Crosswind is abandoning its free-to-play model and will arrive on Steam Early Access in early 2026 as a buy-to-play survival MMO, developer Crosswind Crew confirmed in a Steam news post on August 15, 2025. Originally promoted as an open-ended Age-of-Sail MMO sprawling across dangerous high-seas zones, the project is now refocusing on structured PvE progression that can be played solo or with a small crew.
The studio cited rising server infrastructure costs and player feedback as decisive factors. A majority of alpha participants, rooted in traditional survival titles such as Valheim and Raft, said they preferred the slower tempo, detailed ship management, and atmospheric voyages over large-scale online interaction. Expect tighter PvE quest lines, expanded AI naval encounters, and persistent world events while the contentious free-roam PvP zones have been cut completely.
Buy-to-play pricing has not yet been announced, but Crosswind Crew promises all post-launch adventuring content will be included in the single purchase with no premium subscription fees. A dedicated endgame system built around captain progression, specialized ship roles, and seasonal world events is targeted for the launch build. Console versions remain unconfirmed.
